Permissions - Thievery and Psychic Powers!

Zed's got some special abilities under her belt - this is going to be where I gather my information for what is and isn't okay for her to do/read about your character!

The abilities in question, straight from her app -

Learned Skills
Pickpocketing/Lockpicking/Misdirection - Her time on the streets has taught her a number of ways to get her hand on someone else's things for her own survival. (With permissions.)
Arcane Knowledge - Her time with John Constantine has taught her a fair bit about psychic powers, ghosts, and magic. She isn't a magic user herself, but can recognize it when she sees it (without panicing). Maybe in desperation she may try to cast a spell she's seen John do...but more likely it would do absolutely nothing.

Psychic
Precognition - Glimpses at the future of a person or place.
Retrocognition - Glimpses at the past of a person or place.
Clairsentience - Feeling the past, future, or present emotional states of others.
Clairtangience - Receiving psychic information with touch as the trigger/stimuli.
Channeling - Allowing a departed soul to speak through her body. (VERY DANGEROUS, VERY HARMFUL. Last time she tried this she was hospitalized. I do not know why this would come up in game, but if you have an idea, please ask!)

For each character who has CR with her, please answer the following:

Can she pickpocket or steal from your character (per OOC agreement)? Would they be susceptible to a con artist?

Does your character have noticeable magical attributes she would notice? If so, what are they?

Can Zed psychically read your character, by accident or with focus? If yes:
- Is there any imagery attached to your character that Zed could end up drawing or seeing? Symbols, scenes, features?
- May Zed feel the current emotional state of your character via touch? What emotions would you most closely associate with your character in general?
- May Zed experience a life event from your character's past? If so, is there a notable one you would like read?
- May Zed experience an event that is happening or about to happen to your character? (Obviously, this one will be planned OOCly at time of thread.)

The Games Application - Zed

OUT of CHARACTER
Name: Vin
Other characters: None right now!

IN CHARACTER
Name: Mary "Zed" Martin
Alias: She just goes by Zed. Call her Mary and she will probably punch you.
Fandom: Constantine (NBC)
Canon point/AU: Post season one.

Journal: [personal profile] chicabonita
PB: Angelica Ceraya
Age: 27. She's just 27.
History: NBC's Constantine Wiki Page - her actual canon.

For additional reference, her comic canon page.

Zed's wiki page is really, really out of date, so to sum things up better:

She was raised by her father, the head of a religious cult who had big, BIG plans for her and all her powers. They kept her locked up, forced their doctrine down her throat...and when she was finally able to escape, she did. She ran fast and hard - trying to find some sort of direction that wasn't back to THEM - and in the process, ran directly into the man her visions had pushed her to draw over and over and over again: John Constantine.

She's been travelling with John for a while now, begrudgingly coming to care a great deal about her new, strange little family. He's been teaching her how to use her powers, how to navigate the magical world, how to come to grips with what's REALLY out there; she's been teaching him how to trust people, how to do things without brute force, and that it's at least a little okay to open your heart sometimes.

Late in the series, she finds out that she has a brain tumor, right over her pineal gland - the center of your brain that is thought and memory. She had a crisis of faith, wondering whether her powers are real, wondering what to do...but ultimately deciding that the work that they do to fight the Rising Darkness is more important than her comfort.

By canon point, she has let John in on her past, and she's more than willing to continue to fight by his side.

Presentation: Upon meeting Zed for the first time, John Constantine asked what a "chica bonita in her mid-20s" was doing in a tiny little mining town. It's true that she's typically incongruous with a backwoods atmosphere - she's certainly a very attractive, city-dwelling sort of girl. Her style is comfortable, but not particularly frilly, generally favoring leather over lace (if she cannot have both). She keeps up with her hair and makeup when she can, not because she is vain, but simply because she likes it. She looks very much like she belongs in the big city - but regardless of how she looks, she always seems to be just where she needs to be.

This is not a woman who will jump when she is told to, that much is obvious. She's stubborn from the outset, wearing disdain upon her sleeve (unless, of course, she needs to butter someone up). Her grit is astounding, her reactions reasonable but remarkably calm when faced with something horrifying; at times, it's unclear whether she's really brave or just that powerfully bull-headed.

A brief conversation with Zed will reveal a very quick wit. It's easy for her to flash a pretty smile and have a heartfelt talk, but it's just as easy for her to navigate the words and find a way to make the situation work in her favor somehow. If you get to know her, you will learn quickly that she's skilled in the art of the con, and she's remarkably good at getting her hand in and out of your pocket without you even noticing - but if you're a friend, it will all be done in good fun, or in your favor.

If you are not a friend, you may not be so lucky, and you may find yourself missing something important.

Motivations: If there is one thing that defines Zed as a person, above anything else, it is her heart. She has the desire to make a difference in the world around her - likely, in part, because of her dark past. If someone around her is hurt, she will try to help them, even if they have been less than pleasant to her; she live by the philosophy that people can change, if they just listen to the good in them. Even if there doesn't seem to be any good to change said person with, she has a hard time leaving someone in pain.

She is as tough as she looks, but beyond that thick skin, she does internalize the things that happen to her. She may not let any terror stop her in her tracks, but she does take the time to contemplate and process any information, perhaps put it on paper, and acknowledge what has transpired. It isn't that she doesn't cry - crying happens, crying does not signify weakness - but she is more the kind to absorb experiences and learn from them than she is the kind to cry and pretend that it didn't happen.

Zed is a knowledgeable woman, and she has learned much of how the world works. She has been through a lot in her time...be it the supernatural or the way to survive on the run with no source of income. With every experience, she puts a new notch in her belt - putting her skills at paying attention to good use. If she has the opportunity to learn from her environment or someone else, she most certainly will.

It would be impossible to talk about Zed's motivations without bringing up John Constantine. She spent months and months drawing the man over and over again until finally she crossed paths with him, and now he has become a sort of mentor and teacher to her. Losing both her powers and John upon arrival in this strange world won't please her - in spite of some of John's better efforts, she likes him, and the prospect of being alone again is going to cause a bit of a wound. The will to get back to him, to get back to helping him fix what in the world only they can, is going to light a fire in Zed that will encourage resourcefulness instead of apathy.

Relatively recently, she has found out that she has a brain tumor right over her pineal gland. She gets headaches - and at worst, she gets seizures. Despite this, she has decided that it would be best to carry on as she is, helping people until her time comes...instead of saving her own neck, but potentially losing her abilities forever.

Setting: While Zed isn't exactly a stranger to horrifying events, the concept of the Games themselves is going to shake her up in a very deep way. She's not a killer, and being killed is going to leave her more than a little bit rattled.

She is, however, adaptive - and eventually, her heart will win out over the initial horror. She'll be able to see that there are people around her who need help, and will do anything she can to make that happen.

SAMPLES
First Person Thread: [Zed stares the camera down, eyes wide, brows knitted together. She's white as a sheet and trembling, and it's obvious to anyone why - she had just been decapitated on camera, after all. A hand rests on her throat, wrapping around it as if trying to hold her head on.

She can't get it out of her mind. The blade came at her in a flash. There was an instant of blood down her front, and then...nothing. The nothing is what is scaring her the most. It goes against everything she ever thought about death...contradicts so much of what she's learned with John.]

I didn't think...dying would feel like that.

[Her hand moves from her throat to her head, fingers twining through her hair. Of course she realizes that she is supposed to be talking to the camera, but she's having a hard time finding the words. The sense of wrong was so great, she felt like a deer in the headlights under the steady blink blink blink of the little recording device.]

You want to know how I feel...wrong. The answer is wrong. Dying shouldn't be temporary. The soul isn't...made for this.

[Something defiant surges up in her, steeling her, and she lifts her chin a little, whether it's trembling or not.]

...I feel...angry.

Prose: The weapons are numerous, the targets even moreso - they're all around her, gleaming in the sharp lighting of the room, appearing to anticipate being picked up and wielded.

Zed frowned at all of them thoughtfully, hands fumbling about each other in front of her. Sure, she knew how to swing a weapon - she probably wouldn't have made it this far if she didn't - but what good would that really do? The information that she had been supplied with was a lot in a little bit of time, but she was used to that. For the moment she stood and turned it over in her mind, working out a plan. Of course she could hit some targets.

But her physical strength wasn't her strongest feature, and she damn well knew it.

Sucking in a deep breath through her nose, she threw her hands to her sides, speaking out in a loud, commanding tone of voice.

"If you want me to stab one of these dummies, you're going to be waiting all day. I'm not going to do it. It's not going to impress you if I do, right? Some woman with a knife - or a sword - hacking at a target? I mean, haven't you seen enough of that? Scared people thrown in here, desperate to impress you?"

This was a risk, and she knew it - but really, what was the worst they were going to do? Kill her before they could put he into their deathmatch? No. She may as well call their bluff.

May as well make the deathbed before climbing into it.

"I'm not scared. And I could care less about impressing you - because I'm going to win, I'm going to get out of here, and I'm going to get back to where I'm needed." Once this was dispensed, she dropped down to the ground, sitting cross-legged and cross-armed in the middle of the room.

"That's going to have to be enough for you, because I'm not going anywhere until the door gets opened back up."

What is your character scored: Given the skillset below (as well as her reasonable level of physical fitness and attractiveness), I would probably place Zed at about a 7.

Zed's skillset is as follows -

Pickpocketing/Lockpicking/Misdirection - Her time on the streets has taught her a number of ways to get her hand on someone else's things for her own survival. (With permissions.)
Languages - Zed is fluent in Spanish, ASL, English, and studies many others in her spare time.
Gift of Gab - She's got a naturally disarming kindness about her that, while not a power, does tend to get people to talk and trust her a bit quicker than some others. It also makes her an appealing person to watch.
Artist - One of her most impressive skills. Zed is a talented mixed media artist, able to capture people and scenes with remarkable emotion. When her powers are active, she uses her artistic skills to put visions to paper.
Arcane Knowledge - Her time with John Constantine has taught her at least a bit about psychic powers, ghosts, and magic. She isn't a magic user herself, but can recognize it when she sees it (without panicing). Maybe in desperation she may try to cast a spell she's seen John do...but more likely it would do absolutely nothing.

Zed is, under normal circumstances, a powerful (if still very green) psychic. Her powers are as follows and will all be under permissions when active - and she cannot always use them on purpose:

Precognition - Glimpses at the future of a person or place.
Retrocognition - Glimpses at the past of a person or place.
Clairsentience - Feeling the past, future, or present emotional states of others.
Clairtangience - Receiving psychic information with touch as the trigger/stimuli.
Channeling - Allowing a departed soul to speak through her body. (VERY DANGEROUS, VERY HARMFUL. Last time she tried this she was hospitalized.)

Token: Her sketchbook - half full of pictures of John Constantine, monsters, and angels.
